The quiet beginning…

This is our family friend and our first neighbor when my parents moved to the states. She watched me when I was young and she, herself, has an amazing family of her own which I grew up with. She brought up stories of me growing up and how bad I was. I enjoyed them and loved her eye for detail in prepping the flowers for the ceremony.

There’s something about food preparation in our culture. My mom finds it so important that I know how to cook, she reminds every time I see her.

My mom prepares for the monks to arrive while she talks about her cancer and what’s treatments she’s going through. I thought she looked beautiful in her traditional outfit.

They arrive looking cool. We have a temple in Murfreesboro, which houses about 8-16 monks from Laos at various times.

My dad like he always is, lightens up the room by making a funny comment.

They start lighting the candles which melt into the bowl. The candles are representations of our body and soul. Once they melt and form in the herbal water which we have to shower with once it’s done. They also sprinkle the water as blessings all over the house and everybody in the room.

Everything in these bowls are given to the monks. Monks don’t acquire anything unless it’s given to them. So for example, a monk can only eat what’s given to him. They also stop eating anything solid after 12pm and start fasting taking in only liquids.

My favorite part is the vast amount of good food.

Each person also gets to bless us by wrapping a cotton bracelet around our wrist.

In the end, all we hope is for my mom to get better.

ART and INFORMATION

Lobbies mean a lot for the people visiting a new space—they provide a first impression and shape all the impressions that follow. Lobbies can mean even more to a building’s occupants, who experience the same space every day.

Atlanta’s 64 Perimeter Center, home to Philips Electronics Corporation, needed an interactive focal point for the building’s multi–million dollar lobby renovation. Iconologic designed and developed an installation comprised of five independent flat panels interconnected to provide both functional benefits for building occupants, like real–time weather, news, and traffic, but also beauty in the form of digital art that complements and defines the building’s interior.

Installation content is prioritized to adjust based on daily patterns. At 8 AM, news is prominent; at 5 PM traffic takes precedence; and at 7 PM, the art comes alive.

My little brother Lexus.

Lexus has always been one of my biggest influences on perfecting one’s craft. He practices golf 4-6 hours a day and will push his passion to the limit. He’s somewhat a golf prodigy, winning adult tournaments when he was 13-years-old.

He’s also another solider helping my mom out battle out her cancer. He has a totally different personality from me, but it balances us out as a family.

My Mom’s Battle

This is my mom and she’s one of the greatest human beings I know. It’s hard to write about people you love because there so many things you want to cover from the bad times and the good times that happen between you and them. Lately, it’s been even harder.

My mom was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma cancer back in May. For the past two months, she’s been receiving radiation treatments for her cancer. However, since the beginning of this month, my mom’s cancer turned out to be more aggressive than we thought. Her doctor is now moving her into chemotherapy.

I’ve been private about it until at that point, I decided to pick up my camera not planning or caring whether they’ll be good or bad. I’ve seen a few photographers that have documented family sickness. It’s seemed as a outlet for them. For me, it’s something I can’t fathom in wordsThis is my mom and she’s one of the greatest human beings I know. My parents and my aunt from Paris, France came to visit me this past weekend. I took them around town getting Dim Sum and showed my aunt where I worked and lived. I was happy that my mom was getting out because I bet she’s been bored sitting around the house. She brought her medical papers for me to read because she doesn’t quite understand English. We talked about things she may encounter during her chemotherapy, which she’s still scared of. I asked if I can take her photo and she covered her neck not wanting me to get her scar.

I finally convinced her, telling her that it’s just a mark to remind us of the battles we are fighting or fought in our lives and how we come to overcome / deal with them.

The scar is how they found the cancer. She had a large throat cyst that had to be surgically removed. Once it was removed, the doctor did some test on it and found cells that was cancerous. Then it started from there.

My mom showed me the drugs she’s currently taking to help ease her situation. She’s also receiving charm/blessings bracelets from monks and other people to help do away with the cancer.

It’s been hard on all of us, but I can’t imagine what it’s like for my dad. He’s been on work disability for the last two years and now my mom is not working. However, he’s not the person to dwell on it. He escaped Laos’s political prison dodging bullets, sneaking and swimming across the border to Thailand. There, he met my mom at a refugee camp. My parents came to this country with just a grocery bag of clothes. Today, he waits like me and my little brother, Lexus, for any news on my mom’s situation. I’m happy that he’s with her and being there for her, especially for 26 years.

My mom thinks a lot about her cancer. She calls me quite often and we talk about it. It’s hard for us because we been through a lot with our family, but like my friends tell me, you just got to stay strong and keep your spirits high. It’s also helps that my aunt from Paris came to help us. She’s a retired nurse who also left Laos during the regime change. She’s great and she’s done for so much for my family I can’t imagine how to repay her back (She also went to Laos to see me become a monk). She was excited to see Atlanta and REALLY excited when I showed her the real torches from the Olympic games at work. She’s a fan. Sometimes we tend to dwell on how things will affect us negative wise but like ying and yang there are positives. It’s the moments that we joke around with each other. The moments where you go home and see the biggest smile on their face just because they’re happy to see you. Lately my mom has been eating better and spending more time with us than she has, especially with my aunt. She even has a small garden that her and my dad made together. It’s also great reaching out to people who battled it and shared their experiences. It’s teaching/helping me a lot about life. We don’t know how it’s going to turn out. All we wish, is for our friend, cousin, sister, wife, and mom to get better…

I had the pleasure to shoot Promethean’s Product Overview Videos through Iconologic. We’ve created eight :60-:90 second spots from the footage.

They make interactive whiteboards and education technology for classrooms and push the boundaries of engaging 21st century students.

Porterfield Wedding
